What is Rosacea?

This is a common yet poorly understood chronic skin condition often referred to as “adult acne” that begins with episodes of facial flushing. Symptoms usually appear between the ages 30 to 50, affecting women more than men, especially those of Celtic origin with fair skin and blue eyes. It may be transient, recurrent or persistent. The cause of rosacea is unknown although several environmental factors are known to aggravate the condition.

What are the symptoms of Rosacea?

Flushing of the face or cheeks is usually the first sign of Rosacea. Episodes of flushing can last up to five minutes, spreading to the neck /nd chest, with an unpleasant feeling of heat. Small spots, papules (round red bumps that rise from the skin), and pustules (pus-filled swellings) may develop on the face that are similar to teenage acne. This is often followed by broken capillaries, burning or itching sensation, acne-like eruptions such as whiteheads and red lumps and a tendency to flush/blush easily.

Small blood vessels in the surface of the skin can become inflamed, producing the sort of blotchy skin that is often associated with heavy alcohol consumption. In the most serious and developed cases of Rosacea, the skin can thicken and form excess tissue, usually around the nose. This causes the nose to take on a large, bulbous appearance, a condition known as rhinophyma, though rare in women.

What can help Rosacea?

Clients are advised to avoid triggers such as hot food and drink, alcohol, spicy foods, strenuous exercise, cold winds and sun exposure and to use Dr Murad Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 15 or Waterproof Sunblock SPF 30.
