Microdermabrasion
What is microdermabrasion?
Our skin has a natural skin cell renewal cycle of approximately 30 days. As the skin renews, dead skin cells ‘build up’ and thicken the outer most layer of skin (Stratum Corneum), resulting in a dull, lifeless, often congested, complexion. Microdermabrasion gently exfoliates this build up of dead skin cells to reveal younger, brighter, smoother and softer skin.
How does it work?
A fine stream of minute sterilised crystals are passed over the skin via an applicator pen combined with a vacuum to mechanically remove the dead, damaged and dormant skin cells. In addition to deep cleansing, microdermabrasion also helps to remodel the collagen in the skin. The benefit is that after just one treatment of 30 or 60 minutes, you will see cleaner, fresher and more radiant skin.
The whole face and neck are usually treated paying particular attention to the client’s specific areas of concern, however, body areas can also be treated.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
Since its introduction in the late 1980’s, microdermabrasion has become the most sought after aesthetic procedure in the world, thanks to its great results and the conditions it can treat, including:
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes, mouth and neck
- Improves the collagen and elastin supply and promotes new cell growth
- Improves superficial pigmentation and evens out skin tone
- Improves acne scarring and reduces white and blackheads
- Reduces open pores
- Improves muscle tone and elasticity
- Stimulates lymphatic drainage to remove toxins
- Rejuvenates dull and lifeless skin
- Reduces stress and creates a feeling of deep relaxation
- Improves ingrown hairs after waxing and shaving for men and women
- Prepares the skin for skin rejuvenation with the Lumina IPL system
- Prepares the skin for combination treatment with glycolic or salicylic peels
- Creates stimulation and helps to improve the regeneration process with use of Red LED lights
- Reduces bacteria and improves problem/acne skin with use of Blue LED lights
- Tones and tightens facial muscles and induces relaxation through the use of facial acupressure massagers
What areas can be treated with microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is very popular as a facial treatment, however it is also very beneficial on body areas such as the chest and back to improve acne scarring, between the bust to improve fine lines, on arms to improve “chicken skin” (keratosis pilaris); and on feet for particularly stubborn dry and flaky skin.
How is the treatment carried out?
Following a comprehensive skincare consultation and client consent, the treatment area will be cleansed and removed of any make-up. Once the area is dry, the skin is held taut whilst the applicator passes over the area in short, light strokes until the entire area has been exfoliated. For a deluxe treatment, problem areas can be addressed further and the use of Red/Blue LED lights or acupressure massagers may be used. Finally a masque may be applied to enhance the results followed by a moisturiser and appropriate sun screen. Make-up can be reapplied immediately if required.
How does the treatment feel?
Treatments are comfortable combined with a slight tingling sensation (not unlike mild sand paper rubbing against the skin) coupled with some suction caused by the vacuum. A flushed, mild wind-burn sensation may be experienced for a few hours after treatment. The skin may also be slightly dry and flaky for 2 to 3 days post treatment whilst the renewal occurs.
How soon will I see results?
Microdermabrasion is a progressive procedure so clients will see a subtle improvement even after the first treatment. Generally, a minimum of 4 to 6 sessions is required to see a considerable improvement, however, the skin will feel softer and the skin and circulation will improve with additional treatments as newer, healthier skin cells are produced.
Am I suitable for treatment?
Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin colours and and the majority of skin types, although is not recommended for very sensitive and rosacea skin. As microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure it is suitable for all ages, both male and female alike.
How many treatments will I need?
For problematic skin an initial course of 6 to 12 treatments at weekly or fortnightly intervals is recommended. However, as the skin is constantly renewing itself and as microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment, a monthly or quarterly maintenance programme is recommended for optimum results.
For tired or stressed skin, or clients with a special occasion in mind, microdermabrasion is suitable for a quick pick-me-up as just after one treatment, skin will feel softer and look more radiant.
What about preparation and aftercare?
If you are using skincare products containing glycolic acid you should stop using them 48 hours before your microdermabrasion treatment. These may then be resumed 24 hours after treatment.
As dead skin cells have been removed to reveal younger, smoother and softer skin, it is vital to protect this skin against the harmful damage of the sun and the environment. It is therefore recommended that an SPF is applied daily, eg Dr Murad Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30
