What is an IPL facial?
It is a non-invasive procedure that uses Intense Pulse Light (IPL) within the facial routine to improve and enhance the appearance of the skin. It is regularly performed on the face, neck, décolleté and hands to diminish the signs of ageing. An IPL facial has the unique ability to treat multiple symptoms of ageing skin such as fine lines, broken blood vessels, pigment discoloration such as freckles and age spots, enlarged pores, coarse skin, loss of elasticity, and general UV damage. The result is a brighter, smoother and revitalised complexion.
How does Intense Pulse Light work?
The Lumina IPL system releases precisely controlled short pulses of filtered light which is absorbed by the small blood vessels within the epidermis and dermis. Heat is generated within the skin, stimulating the fibroblast cells to produce collagen and elastin. At the same time, lesions such as thread veins, age spots and freckles can be targeted to give a more uniform complexion and pigmentation of the skin. The result is firmer, tighter and more radiant skin whilst reducing enlarged pores and fine lines. Nd:YAG laser may be used to target deeper lines and to promote further collagen production.
How is the treatment carried out?
The skin is thoroughly cleansed, and a mild relaxing skin peel, or microdermabrasion is often performed before the Intense Pulsed Light or Laser treatment to maximise the results. Exfoliating the skin to remove the top layers of dead skin leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft. A thin layer of chilled gel is applied to the area to guide the light into the skin. The hand piece is placed onto the skin and a short pulse of light is released. It is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area cooled. The skin is then moisturised and an SPF 30 sun cream is applied. During treatment protective eye wear will be provided.
Am I suitable for treatment?
Treatment is suitable for most people except for very dark skinned or tanned clients due to the high concentration of melanin within the skin.
How does the treatment feel?
Treatment is mildly uncomfortable, with the sensation often being described as a “flick of an elastic band”. No anaesthesia is required.
Are there any side effects?
Most people experience no side effects however, for some there may be some redness, swelling or warmth in the treated area, but this usually subsides quickly. Very rarely a small blister may form and there can be temporary hyper or hypo pigmentation.
What should I expect after treatment?
Redness and a slight warming sensation are normal after treatment. A cooling pack is applied after treatment to calm the skin. You may see a darkening of any pigmented spots before they flake off, leading to a more even skin tone. Tightening of the skin should increase over the following months as new collagen is produced within the dermis.
How many treatments will I need?
This will vary from person to person depending on the age of the client and the current sun damage. Treatments are carried out every 2 to 3 weeks with an initial course of 6 treatments recommended for best results. Top-up sessions are performed as required, but typically once or twice a year.
How long does each treatment take?
A facial treatment, including a skin peel or microdermabrasion usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
